Ruston artist Hooshang Khorasani is continuing his busy year of exhibitions with gallery and museum events in Florida and Massachusetts approaching, as well as the local Holiday Arts Tour in Ruston.

A three-painting set of 6x6-inch abstracts will be featured Oct. 7-15 in Tallahassee's 621 Gallery, and two 36x36-inch abstracts will be in Attleboro (Mass.) Arts Museum from Oct. 14 to Nov. 5. The Ruston Arts Tour is scheduled for Nov. 18-20.

Gallery 621 will hold its 17th Annual Art Auction on Oct. 15 with Hooshang's "Fall Series" as one of the items. The preview party and Silent Auction will run from 5:30-7 p.m. with the live auction beginning at 7:30 p.m. The Silent Auction starts Oct. 7. Ruston's 2011 Holiday Arts Tour will begin Friday, Nov. 18, at 4 p.m. with an Art Crawl through downtown Ruston and some of the surrounding artist studios, including Hooshang Studio at 1001 Cedar Creek Road. Hooshang Studio and other sites will also be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 19-20.

"This is a wonderful time for everyone to drop by my studio to see the artwork up close and personal," Hooshang said. "Plus, it will give all the tour participants and the artists a chance to interact with each other."

In addition to original abstracts, Hooshang offers several other genres, including limited-edition prints, florals, figuratives, running horses, landscapes and still lifes.

Hooshang's painting "Horse Power" will be part of the fifth annual "Horizontal Grandeur" exhibition at the Stevens County Historical Museum in Morris, Minn.

The opening reception is set for 6:30 p.m. July 8, with the show running through Oct. 28. In keeping with the theme, the juried show was open to artists in states or provinces that have a prairie, and the artwork must have a prairie-related premise. "Horizontal Grandeur" is an essay by the late poet, essayist and musician Bill Holm.

"People don't often associate the word 'prairie' with Louisiana," Hooshang said, "but the Coastal Prairie is located along the western Gulf coast of the United States in southwest Louisiana and
southeast Texas, just inland from the coastal marsh. It's a tallgrass prairie similar in a lot of ways to the tallgrass prairie of America's Midwest. Only about 1 percent of the Coastal Prairie that existed in pre-settlement days remains."

Hooshang's 36x48-inch acrylic painting depicts a running horse, part of his series of equine works.

The Web site Godolphin.com explains the history of the horse and shows a part of its influence on the prairie:

"Exploration and settlement of the vast North American continent would have been much more difficult, if not impossible, without horses. Although oxen pulled the pioneers' wagons west into the prairies, they are slower than horses and are not as useful. Without horses, for example, there would have been no Pony Express to deliver the mail, no cowboys to round up cattle and no stagecoaches to carry people from town to town. The horse pulled the farmer's plough, carried the cavalry soldier in battle and brought the doctor his patients."

The Stevens Historical Society began in 1922, with its beginnings traced back to the Old Settlers Association, founded in 1876. The society has worked to collect, preserve and offer educational exhibits and programming that interpret its large collection of artwork, textiles and artifacts from those who lived on the glacially formed tallgrass Minnesota prairie.

An extensive restoration and addition to the historic 1905 Carnegie Library building included an extensive open gallery area specifically designed for exhibition purposes. Local history, regional and national exhibits and programming attract thousands of visitors each year. Hours are weekdays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and by appointment. Hooshang's 'Color Storm Symphony' in Shreveport's 'Improptu' show

"Color Storm Symphony" by Hooshang is part of the "Impromptu" exhibit through April 23 at artspace, a gallery sponsored by the Shreveport Regional Arts Council. This exhibition showcases area artists in connection with a visit by the chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts.

"Impromptu" opened March 10 with a 5:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. reception. The exhibit gathered original works of more than 200 Northwest Louisiana artists. It's located in the upstairs "coolspace" gallery.

One person who viewed the show said, "Like a 17th-century art salon, the works on display are packed tight, floor-to-ceiling. It's a phenomenal exhibit for anyone wishing to get more familiar with our region's working artists."

2 of Hooshang's works in 'Off the Wall' at Masur Museum

A set of two paintings by Hooshang will be part of the exhibit in connection with the Masur Musem of Art's "Off-The-Wall" silent auction. The show will be displayed in the Monroe, La., museum's Lower River Gallery. Hooshang's entries are "Sunrise" and "Sunset," mixed media on canvas, 12x12 inches each.

The exhibit began April 1; the auction will be held from 7-9 p.m. April 14.

Proceeds from the fundraiser support educational programs and exhibitions at the Masur Museum. As the largest visual arts museum in northeast Louisiana, the Masur Museum of Art is vital to providing diverse visual art experiences to the community of Northeast Louisiana. This is accomplished through temporary exhibitions, educational programs for all ages, and the management of a permanent collection.

Hooshang's art will be part of two exhibitions in January and February – one at Yellowstone Arts Museum in Billings, Mont., and one at a two-person show in Rockport, Texas.

Khorasani's 36x36-inch mixed-media painting "The Road Not Taken #2" will be part of the 43rd Art Exhibit and Auction at the Yellowstone Arts Museum from Jan. 27 through March 5. A reception is scheduled from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Jan. 27; the live and silent auction night will be March 5.

The event showcases an eclectic mix of styles that have come to characterize the culture of Montana. Artwork will range from cutting-edge contemporary to traditional landscape and Western. Museum officials say the auction is a premier showcase of art that draws collectors from across the country and features some of the region's most prominent artists.

Mary Maxon and Ellen Ornitz served as jurors. Maxon has been curator of exhibits and collections for the Dahl Arts Center in Rapid City, S.D., since 1998. Ornitz is a sculptor and has served as the visual arts director for the Emerson Center for the Arts & Culture in Bozeman, Mont., since 1997.

The Texas show – "Color Storm" – will be at the Rockport Center for the Arts and will feature Khorasani's abstract, equine and floral works. Simultaneously showing at the center will be the ceramics of Houston artist Steve Maness.

This new series of work by Khorasani will run Jan. 26 through Feb. 26 with a reception planned from 5-7 p.m. Feb. 5.

2 of Hooshang's works to become part of museum's permanent collection

Two of Hooshang's works on paper will be added to Lake Eustis Museum of Art's permanent collection. Leading up to that, the paintings will be exhibited in the Florida museum's "Paperworks 4 Me II" exhibit that runs from Dec. 10 through Jan. 16.

The paintings – "Through the Glass Darkly" (above, left) and "Window Glance" – are part of Hooshang's "Window Series." They are mixed media on paper; each measures 22x28 inches.

The artist statement concerning this series is:

"The subject of this work is a beautiful, mysterious woman – the lady that you see always, everywhere, but you don’t know her. With her face in the shadow, her identity is only partly disclosed. I like to think that each time that a viewer looks at my paintings, there will be something new for them to see. With my work, I seek to find the energy and inner life within my subjects without fully revealing them. I try, as it were, to unveil the mysteries and the beauties of the world around me."

'Color Storm VII' sold at Attleboro (Mass.) Arts Museum show and auction

The painting "Color Storm VII" was sold Nov. 6 during the 19th annual Attleboro (Mass.) Arts Museum Benefit Art Show & Auction. Hooshang has participated several years in this event.

The painting is part of his new Color Storm series. Other paintings from the series are on display at The Cottage Gallery in Laguna Beach, Calif., and at Hooshang Studio in Ruston, La.

Hooshang Studio will open its doors this coming Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the region's annual Holiday Arts Tour. He has participated in this event since 1999.

Specific times for each day are:

Beverly Hills welcomes Hooshang to 'Affaire in the Gardens' art show

Hooshang will be at Beverly Hills' "Affaire in the Gardens Art Show" the third week of October -- Oct. 16-17 from 10 a.m. 5 p.m.

Four blocks of arts and crafts will be displayed between Rodeo Drive and Rexford Drive, between Santa Monica Boulevard and Park Way. Hooshang joins approximately 250 other artists who will be featured in what the organizers call "acres of exceptional art."

The exhibitors, who come from around the nation, will showcase their work in painting, sculpture, watercolor, photography, mixed media, ceramics, jewelry, drawings and printmaking. Also available will be live music, children's crafts, gourmet delights, and a wine and fine ale garden.

Held each May and October since 1973, the art show is one of the most popular art events on the West Coast.

Hooshang will exhibit his equine series of running horses.

Hooshang's 'Luminescence #3' in September Competition

"Luminescence #3," a set of two 36x36-inch mixed-media-on-canvas abstracts, will be part of the Alexandria (La.) Museum of Art's 23rd annual September Competition. The opening reception is tomorrow, Aug. 27, from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Set to run through Oct. 2, the exhibit stems from a national competition featuring artists who work in all media. This year's juror was Kelli Scott Kelley, an associate professor of painting at Louisiana State University-Baton Rouge.

"The much-anticipated September Competition promises a strong exhibit that will intrigue and inspire the most discriminating art lover, with works by talented artists from around the country," according to a release from the museum.

MOSI to display Hooshang's 'In the Shadows'

Artists explore such concepts as dreams, visions and images that are either taken from our current environment, our personal viewpoint or an imagined idea. unseen will take the viewer on a visual journey and exploration of existing and new realities and unique perspectives.

Hooshang's "In the Shadows," mixed media on canvas, 30x40 inches," will be part of the exhibit, which is scheduled for July 23 through Aug. 27.

The ARC Gallery at MOSI strives to feature a wide range of artistic media, expressions and styles, from contemporary and abstract to classical and realistic. Its mission is to promote the art of local, regional, and national artists, while focusing on artistic quality, originality and merit.

The unseen exhibition is curated by Zarth Bertsch, director, IMAX Dome Theatre and ARC Gallery; Michael Massaro, sculptor and gallery director of Gallery 501; and Ofra Friedman, sculptor and co-curator of EarthVisions at MOSI. The exhibition will feature all media art, including painting, sculpture, photography, installation and video art, which will be screened in the IMAX Dome Theatre. Hooshang will participate at the La Jolla (Calif.) Festival of the Arts from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 26-27.

This 24th annual event welcomes guests to enjoy the work of nearly 200 of what the show organizers term "the West’s finest artists." Additionally, the show features live music, a silent auction and much more in beautiful coastal San Diego.

Hooshang will be in Booth #727 and will be showing equine paintings.

Concerning Hooshang’s running horses series, consider this excerpt from “Gallery Talk: Conversations with Lee Malerich” in a description of The Ormond (Fla.) Memorial Art Museum's exhibition of “Four-Footed”:

“… These magnificent large-scale acrylics scream 'undomesticated' as they roar, head-on across the canvas. (Hooshang’s) choice of color and kinetic, yet exacting brush strokes exacerbate the motion study. These works are so strong that at a glance one can hear the panting breath and the pounding hoofs of these exotic creatures.”

Hooshang prints shown at Louisiana State Museum, also in LPB art auction

Two of Hooshang's prints published by Bentley Publishing Group were featured in a group show at the Louisiana State Museum in Baton Rouge from April 27 to May 7. The exhibit was a precursor to Louisiana Public Broadcasting’s 2010 Art & Travel Auction, which will air from 6-9 p.m. Sunday, June 13, on LPB. Online bidding began May 1.

The auction is an annual fundraiser for LPB so that the station can continue broadcasting quality educational and cultural programs. It also helps LPB with its community outreach events all year long.

Featured prints are Luminescence #2B (see this item at the LPB auction site by clicking here) and Luminescence #3A (click here). They are framed and signed by the artist.

"These days, funding for the arts and education seems to be the first thing cut from budgets," Hooshang said in a letter to his collectors, "so I’m happy to donate my work for what I think is a very worthy cause. Please visit the LPB Art Auction web site and bid on my piece – or some of the other interesting items being offered."

The televised auction of donated art work will be broadcast in seven cities across the state: Monroe, Shreveport, Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Lake Charles and New Orleans. Yellowstone Art Museum exhibits Hooshang Khorasani's work in 'Art Auction 42: Hollywood Extravaganza'

Hooshang's painting "Quiet Horse" is part of the 42nd Annual Art Auction at the Yellowstone Art Museum in Billings, Mont. The event is a juried show with more than 600 artists vying for the opportunity to be one of the 160 artists represented.

"Art Auction 42: Hollywood Extravaganza" celebrates the elegance of 1942 Hollywood and will take place March 6.

Artwork featured in the exhibition, which began Jan. 28, showcases the eclectic mix of styles that has come to characterize the culture of Montana. Hooshang is participating in the 18th annual Benefit Art Auction for the Attleboro (Mass.) Arts Museum.

An exhibit in connection with the auction is on display at the museum from Oct. 23 through Nov. 5. The live auction is scheduled for Nov. 7.

His painting, "The Road Not Taken," is 36-by-36 inches mixed media on canvas and, along with other auction items, can be viewed at www.attleboroartsmuseum.cmarket.com. He also participated in the 2008 auction.

Just in time for Valentine's Day, the final segment of Hooshang's winter Open Studio series is set for Saturday, Feb. 7.

Admirers of "Art for the Modern Eye" can visit Hooshang Studio at 1001 Cedar Creek Road from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The studio is also open by appointment.

An award-winning artist, Hooshang offers a large range of both prints and originals in numerous genres.

Another February event for Hooshang is a show at Highlands Museum of the Arts in Sebring, Fla., which will feature his two-painting abstract set "Radiance" (shown in The News-Star article above).

2nd winter Open Studio on horizon for Hooshang Studio

Hooshang will host the second of his three winter Open Studio events Saturday, Jan. 17. Art enthusiasts can visit the studio at 1001 Cedar Creek Road from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The third event will be Feb. 7, and the studio is also open by appointment.

Available artwork includes prints ranging from 8½ by 11 inches to 13 by 19 inches and originals from 6 by 6 inches to 48 by 60; prices run from $35 to $3,500. He offers an array of genres: abstracts, florals, landscapes, equine studies, female figures and still lifes.

Hooshang's work in 'New Art International'

For the second time in the last several months, Hooshang's work is featured in an art book.

"New Art International," published in New York by Book Art Press, is scheduled for a December release and is to be available in more than 450 Barnes and Noble stores and over 400 Borders bookstores in addition to many other chains, independents, museums and art supply stores. The volume spotlights four pages of what Hooshang calls his "lady paintings."

Other national distributors are Ingram Periodicals, CMG, Hearst/Conde-Nast, IPD, CLC, The News Group, Kent News, Speedimpex and Disticor.

Concerning Hooshang's lady series, the San Francisco-based Visualize publishing firm, which published several of the images earlier, wrote:

"His women are mysterious femme fatales with lithe arms and faces veiled in shadows. (They) are rendered in rich, earthy tones against cool backgrounds, creating context without distraction. (With) these fluid, sensuous works … you'll discover that each time you look at them, you'll find something new."

This publication of Hooshang's work follows another from the fall – "The New Faces of Art," published by Artnow International Corp. in Florida. Hooshang's equine series was featured there. That volume can be found at selected book stores, Web sites such as target.com and amazon.com, and art fairs around the world. Hooshang announces 3 Open Art Studio dates

Hooshang will begin a series of monthly Open Studio events starting Saturday, Dec. 13. The reason is two-fold:

• During the North Central Louisiana Arts Council Holiday Arts Tour, meeting and interacting with the public was so much fun that Hooshang is seeking to continue the open-house concept.
• If anyone missed the Arts Tour, Hooshang doesn't want them to miss out on the unique art available in his studio, especially during the holidays.

"Art is always a good purchase – and also a good present," he said. "As the saying goes, 'Art is food for the soul.'

"The earlier Arts Tour provided a time for people to purchase art not only for themselves, but also for others. This is just one more way that we are inviting the public into our home in order to do that."

At this time Hooshang is also planning an Open Studio for Jan. 17 and Feb. 7. These events will be either the first, second or third Saturday of the month, depending on how the calendar and holidays fall.

On Open Studio days, visitors can drop by any time between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Of course, Hooshang Studio – at 1001 Cedar Creek Road in Ruston – is also open by appointment throughout the year.

Both original art and prints are available. The prints range from $35 to $75 and originals from $150 to $3,500. A plethora of subjects are available: abstract, florals, landscapes, equine studies, female figures and still lifes. Hooshang works in acrylic and mixed media on canvas, paper and board.

And Hooshang's work comes with a guarantee: Buy art for Christmas, and your heart will grow three sizes … immediately!

An article that highlighted the latest activities concerning Hooshang's artwork appeared this week in The Ruston Daily Leader. A big thanks to reporter Monica Crowe for a job well-done.

The front-page article appeared as part of a series on the 2008 Holiday Arts Tour, an event sponsored annually by the North Central Louisiana Arts Council. Hooshang has participated in this tour since 1999.

Please mark Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 15-16, as the dates that you can "tour" the area and see the work of more than 75 local artists in 25 locations. A new aspect this year is that if you get your passbook stamped by each participating artist, your name can be entered into a drawing for one of three original artworks donated by the tour artists.

Hooshang Studio is easy to find -- at 1001 Cedar Creek Road in Ruston. Look for the gray wooden house with lots of angles and a big red abstract sculpture in the front yard.

'The New Faces of Art' spotlights Hooshang Khorasani

Hooshang's equine work will be featured in the most recent and upcoming book from Artnow International Corp., "The New Faces of Art." The volume will be found at selected book stores, Internet sites and art fairs around the world.

Hooshang Khorasani exhibits in 'The Art of the Horse'

One of Hooshang's latest exhibits was at the 9th annual New Jersey Equine Artists' Association show, "The Art of the Horse," from Sept. 14 to Oct. 25, 2008.

The national juried exhibit included both paintings and sculpture at the Johnson Gallery at Somerset Art Association.

NJEAA director, Sheila Barnes, said, "New Jersey’s state animal is the horse, and as such this spot is a hotbed of folks interested in this wonderful animal. The show is always a success as that group turns out in full force." Founded in 1999, NJEAA promotes equine art and artists in New Jersey. Through invitational and national juried shows and workshops, the group generates interest in equine art among art lovers, horse enthusiasts and the general public.

Hooshang's painting "Equine Exuberance" was chosen for the show postcard (see above).
